ImagineIT - Spring Timeline
In my last update, I said I would try and apply my strategies to my geometry students, but I don't I think I am going to do that this year. It might be too late and I'm not sure they would be serious enough of students to be able to effectively internalize the lessons. Plus, I'm worried that this would be too much to take on this late in the year. If I could start again, I would definitely try to implement it in my geometry classes. I also would start the whole process sooner: I feel that I could be farther on if I had begun day one of the school year.
My project can grow in many ways, since I feel I didn't do nearly as much as I could have this past semester. I could give the students more opportunities to show their ability to persevere. However, before I do that, I need to get the perseverance rubric created, which is my first priority. This semester I would like to get that rubric done, then have students solve problems under the rubric and grade them. Next, I would have students pair up and follow one of their strategies to its end, regardless of correctness (Strategy Work). Finally, I would have students work on realizing that their approach is incorrect, since that is one of the most difficult things to do (Reassessment Strategies). In terms of benchmarks, I would say (1) Rubric, (2) Strategy Work, (3) Reassessment Strategies, (4) Final Interviews.
Finally, my hopes would be that students would become more confident in their ability to stick with problems, and not give up. I would see initial perseverance scores (on the rubric) increase to a higher level by semester's end. I'm not sure how much that should be since the rubrics aren't finished yet. I would also like to see exit interviews with students reflect that they do feel more confident in their problem solving abilities and that they have learned to persevere more.
